Donors who donate certain publicly traded securities “in kind” to Canadian private foundations or registered public charities, such as the Foundation of Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, are exempt from the payment of capital gains tax on any profit created by the fair market value of the donation.
Qualifying securities include stocks, bonds, trust units, exchange-traded funds, segregated funds and mutual funds units. In order to qualify, the donation must be made “in kind” (or in their current form, unsold) and the shares must be publicly traded on Canadian or other major international exchanges (private company holdings do not qualify at this time).
If you are interested in taking advantage of this tax-smart way to make an impact on healthcare in your community, please read and complete the Notification of Securities Transfer Form linked to below, and send it to the Foundation by email (email@example.com) or by fax 519-436-2550 Attention: Linda Vince, CPA, CGA. Linda can also be reached by phone by calling the Foundation of CKHA office at 519-436-2538.
